Secretary - Carol Gaskamp

My interest in genealogy goes back many years when growing up and hearing family stories of my German and Wend ancestors. My Washington County ancestors first came to the area in December 1850, settling in the William Penn community. I now live in the 1883 home that my great-grandparents built and where my maternal grandfather was born. My paternal grandmother was also born in Washington county but moved to Houston when she was a year old.

I have found newspaper ads for her father’s Brenham blacksmith business! My husband’s paternal family roots are in the Washington county Zionsville community.

I am grateful to aunts and uncles on both sides of my family who willingly shared their extensive genealogical research so I had a good start on the work I continue to do on building a family history for my children and grandchildren. I use a variety of resources for genealogy research, including the Nancy Carol Roberts Library, and online resources such as FamilySearch, Ancestry, My Heritage, edocTechnologies, and Portal to Texas History.

She has been a member of the Washington County Genealogical Society since 2015 where she has served as Vice President and President and is currently serving as Communications Committee Chair. A native of Washington County, she grew up in the Prairie Hill community. Her paternal and maternal families immigrated to Washington County starting in 1854 from areas in the German and Prussian Empires.
